Why so inexpensive?
Despite the near-perfect growing conditions, the wine region of Gredos in the mountains outside of Madrid has languished in obscurity. Over the past few decades though, it has become more profitable to turn these vineyards into suburban homes and country retreats for the population of Madrid. But thanks to the work of winemakers like Daniel Jimenez-Landi and Fernando Garcia at their Comando G winery, the region has become recognized for its hauntingly perfumed Garnacha. The region, tucked away high in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range, is pocketed with small, nearly inaccessible vineyards planted before memory, hidden in rockfalls, crevices and natural amphitheaters. Old vines, high altitude, easy draining soils and a cool micro-climate give a long growing season – all coming together to deliver elegant, perfumed wines.
Talk about beautiful, intoxicating aromas – cherries, wildflowers, strawberries… the staggering array hits you wave upon wave… till you finally cannot resist and have to indulge! It’s almost criminal that a burger/pizza wine is this good, so maybe up your game and prepare some pork carnitas! Or...
Pair with Cocido Madrileño, of course! Madrid’s take on the traditional Spanish stew usually consists of a flavorful broth full of vegetables, chickpeas, chorizo sausage, and pork. The stew simmers for upwards of four hours, creating a blend of heavenly, robust flavors that make for the ideal cure to Madrid’s wintry weather. Cocido Madrileño is usually eaten in two or three courses. Once the chickpeas, meats, and vegetables have been cooked, the broth is separated and used to make soup. This steaming soup becomes the first course. The rest of the flavorful ingredients are served as the main dish, often in two rounds.
