Anyhoo… the funny thing about Cabernet Sauvignon, or King Cab, is, despite its structure and body, it is a year-round wine for me… and all of you! As borne out by our sales figures… But it makes sense when you think about it. Sure, in the winter months, it is an easy choice to warm your bones. But in the summer… hmmm… let’s say you are grilling some steaks… or burgers… or lamb chops… heck, that grill adds smokiness and intensity to a pork loin as well… gotta have something big to stand up to all of that.
Cabernet Sauvignon!!!
Now, the Sophenia Reserve Cab has been a favorite of ours for years. But even I was taken aback when I tried this – I had to double check the label, as I would have sworn I was tasting their Synthesis Red at $45+! It seems the reputation of winemaker Matias Michelini is more than deserved. Absolutely stunning for the price. Heck, this would be stunning at twice the price!
100% estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon grown at 4000 ft. altitude in the Tunpungato region of Mendoza, Argentina. During the peak growing season in this high desert climate, the vines see huge swings between day and night temperatures. This produces thick skinned, flavorful fruit, with good acid levels. These grapes are the basis of a powerful Cab with immense structure, and full bodied complexity. Concentrated and rich with dark fruits, showing a solid rocky minerality that gives it great depth. Sweet berries and blackcurrants fill your mouth, all balanced by a smooth backbone of tannins woven into a slightly creamy texture. The wine has a great overall freshness coming from its bright acidity. It’s a rock star with some air now, but will age for another 3-4 years easily. Great with leg of lamb, beef tenderloin, or just an all-American cheeseburger.

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserva Sophenia from Gualtallary, Uco Valley was aged for 12 months in American barrels. Garnet red with a purple sheen. The nose presents aromas of blackcurrant and pepper against an elegant vanilla backdrop. Indulgent and free flowing, the palate offers intense flavor, juice and a lean texture with reactive, finely grained tannins." - Joaquín Hidalgo
