Sigh… but never fear, Hamilton Russell is here! Hamilton Russell Vineyards, one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea - is located in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation. The Estate specializes in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay. So why the lead-in reference to Burgundy? Because, close your eyes and that’s what you would swear you were drinking – 1er Cru Puligny Montrachet without the price tag!
Now, here is the “real” sales pitch. The wine is very limited. So much so that last year, I missed the entire vintage… of my wife’s favorite white wine. Yeah… we’ve been out now for over a year. At least twice a month, when I ask what she wants with dinner, she’ll say, “A Hamilton Russell.” I cannot tell you how much trouble I have been in. I bring her 1er Cru Puligny… 1er Cru St. Aubin… at twice the price… no dice…
So, I am buying 3 cases of this one. If nobody else buys, that is your loss. I’m getting mine! Or rather, my wife’s!
After initial opening, I would recommend double-decanting this for 45 minutes. Like its Burgundian inspiration, this wine is best served with a little air time. Ideally, I would set this down for 3+ years. For $29.99? Obscene is the best word I can think of!
