So what is Special Club Champagne? Officially called the Club de Trésors (Club of Treasures), this classification is the highest tier a Grower’s Champagne can achieve. This prestigious group was established in 1971 as the Club de Viticulteurs Champenois to showcase the finest terroir driven wines of the region in the best vintages. The group consists of just 28 artisanal producers today, a tiny segment of the nearly 5000 growers in Champagne. The selection process for this classification is rigorous. Members meet in February to taste the top still wines from the previous harvest to decide if the vintage is distinguished enough to be considered for Special Club. If the vintage makes the cut then each producer’s wines must pass two blind tastings, in still wine form and as sparkling after the wine has aged at least three years. Only the best are then picked for Special Club designation and bottled in the specially shaped 18th century styled bottles. Typically you can expect to pay $100+ for a good bottle of Special Club. This Grand Cru bottling from one of the best vintages on record available under $80 a bottle is an incredible deal!
The Goutorbe family have been producing exceptional estate grown Champagnes since the 1940s. Long before that generations of the Goutorbe family were “pépiniéristes” (nurserymen) propagating vines for Champagnes best vineyards, viticulture is in their blood. Today Rene Goutorbe farms 26 hectares of vines, including 6 in the prestigious Grand Cru village of Aÿ where the fruit for this Special Club comes from. This 2008 is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, all sustainably farmed. Aged for upwards of 84+ months this beauty has only just been released to this market, so there are no reviews out yet. But the regular 2008 Goutorbe bottling scored 91-92+ pts Vinous and Wine Advocate, and the previous 2006 Special Club scored double 93’s too… Safe to say this 2008 Special Club is going to knock it out of the park, but we’ll be sold out long before it gets reviewed. Don’t miss it!
“Disgorged in May 2018, this release of Goutorbe's 2006 Brut Grand Cru Special Club is showing very well indeed, bursting from the glass with a rich bouquet of warm biscuits, confit lemons, ginger, honeycomb and smoky yellow orchard fruit. On the palate, the wine is broad and full-bodied, with superb concentration, ripe acids and a fleshy, vinous profile, its mousse already nicely refined. The finish is long and lusty. This is a gourmand Champagne, dominated by Pinot Noir from Aÿ, that will work well at table.” – WA on the 2006.
“The 2006 Brut Spécial Club is a powerful, bombastic wine that showcases the natural intensity of Aÿ. Baked apple tart, spice, butter and a touch of tropical fruit all develop as the 2006 opens in the glass, showing off its creamy, expansive personality. Radiant and inviting, the 2006 is showing well today. Dosage is 8.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: April 19, 2020.” – VM on the 2006.
