From this terroir-friendly producer in the heart of the village of Bué. The winery was established in the 1600’s, and after many generations of winegrowers, it landed in the capable hands of Jean-Max Roger in the 1970s. Ever since Jean-Max has been making strides towards expanding the estate, as well as improving the sustainability practices, so that his sons and there’s would be able to work the same land and experience the same terroir-quality we do in Jean-Max’s mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc.
This is perfect for year-round white wine drinkers – there’s bound to be one or four at your upcoming family gatherings, and this will keep them all happy. The ultimate crowd-pleaser! You know how I know… the CHWC crew, with our varying, finicky tastes, all gave this a thumbs up. That almost never happens when Sauvignon Blanc walks through the door! It’s hard to find Sauvignon Blanc, even from Sancerre, that balances the acidity as beautifully as this wine and still manages to stay under $30 a bottle. I think that’s the crux of why it’s for the masses – freshness and poignancy in an approachable package.
I’m going to harp on the soil some more! It’s really the essence of this wine, thrown right in the name… “Marnes” or Kimmeridgian Marls and limestone also known as “Caillotes” in the region. The mix of soils lends to the intense and elegant aromatics that hit all the sweet-spots, which is exaggerated by fermenting with natural yeasts. You get a lightly fruited nose with ripe lemon citrus, white peach and other stone fruits swathed in pretty florals and earthy wet stone notes. Couldn’t be happier that the nose translates to the palate with some stony minerals and mid-palate spice from the long lees aging adding a welcome savory edge. It’s not over yet… there’s a juicy lengthy finish making your mouth feel coated by the chalky texture and medium body. Perfectly satisfying as an aperitif, but Sancerre is known for pairing with the bounty of the sea. Chill and enjoy with oysters on the half shell, quiche and brunch dishes, or just chicken from the grill. Try richer dishes too like Risotto or a range of cheeses.
