Chambolle-Musigny is known in the wine world to produce Pinot Noir at the highest level of quality. Along with Vosne-Romanee and Gevry-Chambertin, this appellation is said to have the best Pinot Noir on Earth, actually. Characteristically compared to Volnay, but with additional power and finesse. Jean-Michel Guillon has harnessed these qualities and honed a personal style that’s distinct, modern, and incredibly impressive.
What defines Guillon’s wines is the rare decision to use 100% new French oak across his entire range. This should not be frightening! The ripe, concentrated fruit from these old vines can handle hit, and Guillon has a deft touch. Which is why he was named ‘Burgundy Grower of the Year’ by Guide Hachette in 2020.
We were lucky enough to taste this wine alongside Pommard, Givry 1er Cru and Gevry Chambertin from other favorite producers, and at the end, Rich and I both agreed that this wine was our ‘wow’ moment. The floral power on the nose is absolutely intoxicating and the pretty plum palate is bracketed by spicy oak and lacy acidity. But the fruit is expressed beautifully – debunking this misconception regarding fully oaked wines.
Guillon started with just over 2 hectares of vines in the early 1980’s and has grown into a dominating 16ha operation across some of the most prestigious appellations in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine retains the quality of a boutique winery with Jean-Michel’s son, Alexis, recently taking his place working beside his father.
Jean-Michel Guillon Description
“Chambolle-Musigny is the most feminine appellation on the Côte. The color is ruby with garnet highlights, and on the nose and palate, it exudes a sweetness of ripe fruit while retaining a certain power that tantalizes our taste buds.”
Burghound: 88-90 Points
“As to the style of the 2022s, they're clearly ripe yet what is so interesting about is that the wines are fresh and have remarkably good terroir transparency. The domaine made some lovely wines in 2022… Moderate wood frames spicy aromas of mainly plum and floral elements, especially violet. There is both good energy and detail to the lacy middleweight flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere finale where a hint of bitter pit fruit character slowly emerges.”
