Pisoni is one of the biggest names in Santa Barbara, with massive scores (and the price tags that go with them), they’re a rightfully celebrated producer with a well-earned reputation for quality fruit. So, why am I talking about them? Luli is a collaboration between Mark and Jeff Pisoni and Sommelier, Sara Floyd showing off Santa Lucia Highlands at its best. Mark handles the vineyards, Jeff and Sara handle the winemaking, and the result is nothing short of extraordinary!
First and foremost, yes- this is Pisoni-made juice for less than half the price of their estate. They’ve described this as a direct reaction to the state of the domestic wine market, trying to keep this style of incredible wine at an affordable price. Being a fan of Southern California wines myself, I’m thrilled to see more of this cropping up on the market.
This is red fruited and delicious, a vibrant Syrah that sings with bright acid and deep herbal tones. Incredible secondary and tertiary notes cascade off the palette, while still remaining light and buoyant. Vinous notes the lack of “imposing tannin”, a feature that makes it incredibly welcome at the weeknight dinner table. It’s beautiful as we transition in to cooler weather, a perfect midpoint between warm summer flavors and crisp fall floral tones, and you can taste it this Saturday in Chapel Hill! This young, vibrant Syrah is a great pairing for all manner of meats, especially off the grill. But one of my favorite dishes is a lamb tagine served over couscous studded with pomegranate seeds.... Google a recipe and have a go!

“The 2022 Syrah (Santa Lucia Highlands) is a notably red-fruited interpretation of the variety from a more northern site within the AVA. Bright, tart acids and a heady air of menthol lift a base of energetic strawberry, blood orange, black olive and sassafras. This doesn’t have the imposing tannic heft of some of the other Syrahs in the appellation, which makes it a great candidate for drinking over the near and medium term.”

“Fermented with 50% stems, the 2022 Syrah is classic Syrah goodness, offering juicy blackberry fruits, some peppery, herbal, meaty nuances, medium body, present, firmer, yet integrated tannins, and a great finish. This Saint-Joseph look-alike should be snatched up by savvy readers and enjoyed over the coming 4-6 years, if not longer.”
