For the 3rd lot in a row, Marietta has knocked it out of the park, with another 93+ pt rating from the Wine Advocate!!!
How does Marietta do it?
Simple…. they’ve been doing it for 45 years! When founder Chris Bilbro started producing wine in 1978, California was barely on the map in the wine world. But he knew better and slowly began purchasing vineyards. WHILE THEY WERE CHEAP!!! While most California wineries are still paying off their hefty loans, the Bilbro family quietly continues to produce knockout wines.
I guess that is the other factor - family. Winemaker Scott Bilbro, Chris’ son, takes great pride in continuing and expanding his father’s legacy. And it all starts with their OVR red. It’s also smart business… overdeliver here, and customers jump to the next price tier!
So what do we have? A multi-vintage field blend… meaning the wine is created using more than one vintage - hence the lot number. Field blend means their are multiple grape varieties growing amongst each other in the vineyard. They are harvested and fermented together.
So we can’t say for certain what the exact proportions are, but we know the wine includes Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Grenache and Barbera! Given its kaleidoscope of flavors, this wine pairs well with a wide range of foods. But at this price? Pizza is the ticket for me! Home-made or takeout… this is the perfect quaff!
Marietta Description
“This fresh, clean Zinfandel-based red blend has clear notes of bramble and ripe berries intermingled with white pepper and potpourri. Smooth and long in the mouth, this wine is a balance of bright acid, rich center, and structured finish. Flavors of heady plum and tart strawberry are supported by cocoa and spice yielding a delicious wine with just the right mix of exuberance and restraint that begs to be opened and enjoyed.” Winery note
