I am having a love affair with Langhe Nebbiolo, the entry-level offerings from our top Barolo and Barbaresco producers. There’s only one thing that complicates our burgeoning relationship – I don’t know what I am getting till I open the bottle!
On one end of the spectrum we have wines so delicate and ethereal, they are closer to a rose than a red wine. (I’m looking at you Alessandria Prinsiot!) At the other extreme, we have “babby” Barolo – dark, taught, aged in oak and ready for more years in the cellar.
I know… it’s a rough life having to deal with such stress. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of sorting it all out for you.
This bottling from the legendary Paolo Scavino sits nicely in the middle. Sourced from two vineyards in the famed La Morra district of Barolo, this wine sees 10 months in neutral oak barrels to concentrate the color and flavor. Yet it is ridiculously drinkable in a pop-and-pour way, offering loads of sour cherry, raspberry and tart plums. Nebbiolo’s telltale anise and smoky aromas are there as well. A pan-fried veal chop would be divine
Paolo Scavino Description
93 points Kerin O'Keefe
"The 2022 Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo is absolutely delicious. It opens with heady aromas of blue flower, wild red berry, menthol and culinary spice while the elegant, full-bodied palate offers juicy black cherry, crushed raspberry, blood orange and star anise. Showing the winery’s hallmark of finesse, it has taut, extremely refined tannins while fresh acidity keeps it bright and tangy. Drink through 2027."
