Patrizia Cencioni’s story is one perseverance and determination. Growing up with family in the Montalcino area she always knew she wanted to make great Brunello but was not handed an estate or winery. So, in 1989 she made the bold decision to purchase a neglected property just 2 kilometers southeast of the village of Montalcino, not far from the prestigious Casanova di Neri estate. Patrizia had a vision for this family farm with an old stone winery at the heart and classic Montalcino soils, a combination of “galestro” (a compacted clay) and volcanic rock. Over the past thirty years she has been involved in every aspect of rebuilding this property, planting vines, expanding the cellars, and redesigning the winemaking facilities. Today Patrizia’s property spans almost 100 acres of Montalcino’s hillsides, and she farms 25 acres of Sangiovese Grosso vines and 15 acres of olive trees along with her two daughters Annalisa and Arianna. This small family run winery is one of the rising stars of the region. These wines are not to be missed.
Cencioni’s Brunello is a total knockout. From 20-30 year old vines planted at elevations of 900-1050 ft, fermented in stainless steel on indigenous yeasts then aged in a combination of French and Slavonian oak barrels for 30 months. Make no mistake about it, this is a big rich powerful wine. It captures the essence of Montalcino superbly. Opening with aromas of dark plum, cherry, cedar, tobacco, and earthy minerals, you know this is going to be a big wine. A full-bodied rich palate follows, ripe tannins delivering impressive structure. Expansive and mouth-coating, with flavors of plum, wild berries, coffee bean, and smoked savory spices leading into a minute long finish that remains refined and bright. I suggest decanting for an hour to really let its beauty shine.
Patrizia Cencioni Description
93 points Kerin O'Keefe
"The Patrizia Cencioni 2019 Brunello is a lovely wine, opening with aromas of violet, botanical herb, forest floor and a whiff of new leather. Linear and elegant, the taut palate features ripe black cherry, spiced blueberry, blood orange and star anise before a black tea finish. It has youthful tension, thanks to bright acidity and a backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2027–2039." - KO
Jeb Dunnuck: 93+ Points
“Ruby/garnet-colored, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is appealing on opening, with lush aromas of chocolate covered cherries, sweet sage, pressed flowers, and licorice lifting from the glass. Full-bodied, it expands through the palate with ripe tannins and retains lovely purity throughout. They have done a nice job here finding more balance in these wines, and this is certainly an exceptional vintage for this family estate. I’ve enjoyed watching their evolution. Drink 2025-2037.”

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is distinctly savory with a burst of crushed wild berries, cedar and worn leather. This is silky and enveloping with polished red and blue fruits that swirl throughout and tactile mineral tones, all guided by vibrant acidity. A web of crunchy tannins lingers as the 2019 finishes long and staining yet is also remarkably fresh. Drink 2025-2033." - Eric Guido
