- In 2023, this was Falstaff’s highest rated Chianti Classico… including Riservas!
- For the 2021 vintage, Doghessa was Wine Advocate’s highest rated Chianti Classico. Two Riservas rated 94 pts… one isn’t available in the US, and the other sells for $90!
Long story short… for Chianti… under $70 or so… you cannot do better!
100% Sangiovese from the winery’s Doghessa vineyard. The name pays respect to founder Stefania Canali’s Venetian heritage and to all women, as the “Doghessa” was a sort of female chieftain in the historic Republic of Venice. A mixture of limestone and schist soils result in balancing characteristics of power and depth (limestone) along with freshness and elegance (Schist).
This gem is just gorgeous today, loaded with plenty of black cherry fruit along with hints of lavender, anise and earthy notes. There are whiffs of exotic spices and oak, but they are well-integrated into the wine. Fine tannins on the finish give this the backbone to age another 10 years or more!
The winery suggests a traditional Bistecca Fiorentina or Peposo dell’Impruneta (braised beef with black pepper). (Cue picture of mouthwatering steak… followed by the critics’ notes)
Falstaff: 94 Points
“Vigorous ruby red with purple edges. On the nose fragrance of cherries, blackberries, savoury notes in the echo. On the palate powerful with vivid acidity, fine-meshed, still youthful tannins, fruity finish, nice length.” Falstaff
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
“shows rich, warm-vintage fruit with sweet berry, baking spice and toasted almond. The wine offers nice intensity over a balanced mouthfeel with plenty of dark fruit definition. It closes on a sweet note with dry oak tannins. The label artwork is by American film director James Ivory.” WA
James Suckling: 92 Points
"This has a chocolaty character with ripe red berries, sweet orange peel and red flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and chalky, but fruit-forward and succulent. Ripe core of fruit and a velvety finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now."
Vinous Media: 92 Points
"The 2022 Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi Vigna Doghessa is a gorgeous wine that marries fruit intensity with energy. Bright acids drive through a core of red-toned fruit, orange peel, spice and pomegranate. This juicy, mid-weight Chianti Classico has plenty to offer."
