Another long-time Tuscan favourite producer of mine, Poliziano! Antonio Galloni calls the estate “one of Montepulciano’s reference point producers” and has awarded their top Asinone cuvee 94 pts for the last two vintages. Montepulciano is a small hilltop town in the south of Tuscany that specializes in its own clone of Sangiovese called Prugnolo Gentile. The wines are deep and complex, more akin to those of Montalcino than those of Chianti. The Poliziano was started in 1961 on a small 22 hectare property. Over the past few decades the estate has grown to encompass almost 120 hectares, including some of the best old vine hillside plots to be found anywhere in the region. Here we have Poliziano’s Rosso, an all estate grown and organically farmed wine. A blend of 80% Prugnolo Gentile and 20% Merlot, fermented in stainless steel, then aged 8 months in barriques before release. This is baby Super Tuscan meets Rosso di Montalcino in style, but without the hefty price tag! Dense and broody on the nose, lots of plum and dark cherry notes, with hints of smoked meat and cedar. Rich and complex on the palate, plush layers of dark red fruits, a good firm core of tannins and a long finish that seems to last for minutes. A fantastic bottle now, and this gem will only get better with age. I could see it going 6+ years easily, seriously impressive stuff for less than $15. Try pairing with heartier foods, charcuterie, steaks off the grill, or go classic with a meaty bolognese sauce.
