In the upper Calchaquí Valley in Salta the vineyards are so high up that the air is thin, the UV rays are stronger, the rocky soils are deep, and the grapes have a unique struggle that makes for exceptional wines. The intense UV rays during the day allow perfect ripening even at such high elevation. The grapes of the Colome Estate develop thicker skins than those grown at lower elevation due to increased intensity of the suns radiation. The texture from the skins offers great balance to the full, opulent fruit notes that come along with the extra rays of sunshine(they are closer to the equator than Medoza). Conversely, the temperature drops dramatically overnight and diurnal temperature differences slow the maturation of the grapes allowing for the grapes to develop beautiful aromatics and maintain freshness. The mix of dark fruits and bright floral tones in the Colome Malbec are surely one of the characteristics that put this so high on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list.
Salta? Where is Salta? Doesn’t all the good Malbec come from Mendoza? While Medoza, Argentina has really claimed Malbec as the signature grape of Argentina, you can find amazing deals like this if you look a little further. Further north to be specific. This region to the far north of Mendoza is home to the most elevated vineyards in the world. The soils are known for more minerality and the air is as pure as the snowmelt used for irrigation. It can be a harsh area, but it is also pristine. These vineyards normally don’t get the same recognition as their southern counterparts…but wait! #18 on the Top 100, it doesn’t get much more lauded than that!
So, this wine is big and juicy, with elegant and complex aromatics that range from black cherry, currant and even cocoa nibs. Then it hits the other side of the spectrum with bright floral tones and a touch of fresh mint, the combination is exceptional. Despite the fullness, the finish is surprisingly soft and velvety. A bold, opulent wine that has great balance…that can serve a lot of purposes. The blackberry and cherry fruit notes make this a great pairing for grilled ribs and summertime cookouts. However, the freshness and perfectly balanced acidity mean that it works just as well with pizza and pasta. Don’t forget the empanadas and grilled steaks that Argentina is so famous for! But wait, the complexity and beautiful aromatics might make you want to have a glass after dinner, maybe outside by the fire. What to do, what to do? Stock up and try it with everything!
