So- what’s the secret? This is a project helmed by Vincent Careme, a Vouvray producer originally hailing from Loire. After meeting his wife, a South African Native, he moved to Swartland and began producing equally impressive Chenin Blanc in the Southern Hemisphere. Vincent was able to capture the same lushness that permeates his Loire cuvees but at a significant discount over the old world stuff, with his Vouvray’s clocking in at least 10 bucks more a bottle!
Swartland has a surprising similarity to the Loire in its rich granite soil and proximity to the ocean, so it’s no surprise that Vincent was able to make something so in concert with his Vouvray that still manages to preserve its regional charm. There’s a beautiful richness that shines with tree fruit and citrus, overflowing with ripeness and lifting herbal notes. In some ways, I feel it captures everything I love about Vouvray, but with a slightly more accessible flavor profile and an even more friendly price point.
The real beauty of this wine is just how food friendly it is. Sure- it’s a perfectly potable porch sipper on its lonesome, but this wine is a dream with both fish and fowl.
