The Valtellina region sits in the far northwestern corner of Lombardia, right on the border with Switzerland. Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) has been cultivated on the south facing slopes of the north bank of the River Adda here for over 1000 years. Nino Negri was established in 1897 and remains one of the region’s top estates today. The winery owns 75 acres of premium estate vineyards in the Valtellina Superiore region and manages up to 300 more acres for smaller growers. Winemaker Casimiro Maule (Gambero Rosso’s winemaker of the year in 2007) has been working with these vines for four decades and it shows. He’s honed an impressive style of Nebbiolo that is quite stunning, especially at the sub $20 price point. The Quadrio 2016 is a blend of 90% Chiavennasca and 10% Merlot from the best sites in Valtellina Superiore. Harvested in late October, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged for 18 months in a combination of French and Slavonian oak casks before bottling. I love the wild aromas of strawberry, raspberry, rose petals, rocky minerals and thyme that sets this off. This is a really elegant expression of Nebbiolo. Its silky an pure on the tongue with fine tannins, fresh red berries, warm spices, and long finish that’s fresh with minerals. A great food wine for sure. Charcuterie and cheeses work great, try finding some Bresaola (local salumi from the Valtellina valley) and some Taleggio and Gorgonzola. Or try making this traditional local vegetarian pasta dish Pizzoccheri-alla-Valtellinese. This wine is drinking great now and I expect it’ll age gracefully for at least another 3 or 4 years, load up while you can!
